The Clubs Directory for the Monroe County Area has been updated and revised as of the year 2006. The Clubs Directory for the Monroe County Area consists of a series of separate lists of clubs and related groups in selected categories.
In general, the term "club" is used to refer to a not-for-profit association of individuals or groups, which is open to all who share a common interest or purpose. It may be an informal voluntary association of individuals or a formally organized body acting as a coordinating agency or federation for similar groups.
CATEGORIES: While over 500 clubs are listed in five main categories, the directory does not purport to include all such groups in Monroe County.
ANTIQUES & COLLECTIBLES - Groups of persons whose interest lies in the study, collection, exchange of information and trading of artifacts produced in specific time periods, by particular makers, in a certain style, or having particular social, functional, or artistic value.
CRAFTS - Groups of persons who have joined out of a common interest in the manual arts for artistic and self-development purposes. Examples of crafts covered are quilt-making, weaving, embroidery and other textile arts, woodworking, glass and ceramics, bookbinding and modeling.
FINE & PERFORMING ARTS - Associations of individuals or groups who share an interest in the theatre, dance, storytelling, mime, and instrumental and choral music and who wish to develop and use their skills in performance. Also included are groups who seek to share ideas, develop skills and display their works in the areas of painting, drawing, sculpture, calligraphy and design.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - Groups of individuals whose common interest is the study and exchange of information relating to the natural and applied sciences. Included are groups interested in the collection, raising and display of various kinds of plants and animals; conservation; health and fitness; food and nutrition; and the collection, construction, maintenance and use of machines, instruments and other technology, in fields such as transportation, communications and photography. Some examples are clubs for cooks, auto collectors, computer users, cat fanciers, firearms collectors, balloonists, orchid growers, bonsai enthusiasts, naturalists and naturists.
SPORTS & GAMES - Groups of persons who enjoy athletic and/or mental activities and contests and who wish to share these activities or engage in competition with others. Included, among others, are clubs for hikers, hunters and fishermen, skiers, skaters and snowmobilers, bowlers, boxers and bicyclists, chess players, bridge players and frisbee players, players of rugby football, battle re-enactment enthusiasts and racing pigeon competitors.
NOTES:Unless otherwise indicated, clubs in this directory are primarily adult in membership. Those which are open to youth membership or offer activities for youth will have this noted at the end of the program details along with any limitations which may apply. Clubs which are specifically for youth will note the age limitations at the end of the program details as well.
