"If These Walls could Talk"

We are asking residents of the Village to provide us with details about your places of residence. Pertinent information could include names and details found on your deeds, stories, photos and information in general about your home.  For example, some of you live in buildings used to house sick patients during the influenza epidemic of 1918.  This is an example of a story worth reporting.  The library is interested in establishing this program in order to provide new residents with information about their homes.  So often, new residents make the library one of their first stops, as they begin to orient themselves with the community.  Histories, photos and information about their new homes are among the most common research requests.  Up until now, we have had to delve into compilations of data established by our Village Historians or the library's Local History CD set, which may or may not have information requested.  "If These Walls Could Talk" will begin to create a base of information which we hope will grow over the years, to include all village homes. The plan is to eventually solicit information beyond village limits to include Town of Riga residents.

The success of the program is dependent upon your participation.  Everyone wants access to their local history but fewer people  want to take the time to provide it.  We are asking for your help, because it is a community project.  Without you, it is only an idea.

We plan to limit the information gathered to items that will fit in one manila envelope.  The data to be collected may be sent to us through our Library Hotmail address at newmanriga@hotmail.com or may be dropped off in person at 1 Village Park.  Photos to be submitted must be dropped off in person.  We will be happy to copy photos at the library to include in our envelopes.  It is our desire to ultimately have several shelves of manila envelopes, each dedicated to a particular address.
