Find maps of a certain geographic
area?
From the
Rochester Images basic search page, type the name of the city, town, county, etc. and the
word "maps" into the search box. Select the "Subject Word Search" option from
the drop down box. Click on the "Search" button.
Tip: Be careful with your spelling and be aware that names may be spelled
in various ways. For example, in the Rochester region, "center" may be spelled
"centre" on old maps. You may have to try variant spellings when searching! |

Find specific landmarks, businesses or
streets on the plat maps?
From the
Rochester Images basic search page, type
the name of the business, landmark or
street into the search box along with the word "map". Select the "Keyword"
option from the drop down box. Click on the "Search" button.
Examples:
-"Kirstein map" for maps that show the Kirstein Building (no need to enter the
word Building).
-"Alphonse map" for Alphonse Street maps.
-"Bausch and Lomb and map" will yield the most complete results when
searching for map locations for the Bausch & Lomb Co. No need to enter Co.,
Company, Inc., or Incorporated into the search box.
Tip: Streets and avenues are usually entered with their abbreviations Ave.
and St., while the words alley, road, etc. are entered spelled out. |

Find the book you want from the
List of Directory and Plat Maps in Rochester Images page in this
guide and click on the hyperlinked date. |

Find an individual map?
Browse the Individual Maps in
Rochester Images list in this guide and click on the hyperlinked
title you want. |

Find landowners on these historic
maps?
Try typing the terms "landowners" and "maps" and your desired
geographical area (e.g. "Penfield") into the
Rochester Images database's keyword search
box. Select the "Keywords" search option from the drop down box. Then click
on the "Search" button. When you choose the map you want to search, use the
zoom feature to help you read map details.
Tip: Landowners' names are not indexed; you must search for names on
the maps. |
