How do I find the Map I Want?

How do I...
  Browse the collections?
Find maps of a certain geographic area?
Find specific landmarks, businesses or streets on the plat maps?
Browse one plat book or atlas?
  Find an individual map?
Find landowners on these historic maps?
Learn about the history of street names or other local geographical names?

Browse the collections?
From the Digital Collections home page, choose "Browse All Collections" then click on either "Office of the Monroe County Historian Map Collection" or "Rochester Public Library Local History Division Map Collection".
Find maps of a certain geographic area?
From the Rochester Images basic search page, type the name of the city, town, county, etc. and the word "maps" into the search box.  Select the "Subject Word Search" option from the drop down box. Click on the "Search" button.
Tip: Be careful with your spelling and be aware that names may be spelled in various ways. For example, in the Rochester region, "center" may be spelled "centre" on old maps. You may have to try variant spellings when searching!
Find specific landmarks, businesses or streets on the plat maps?
From the Rochester Images basic search page, type the name of the business, landmark or street into the search box along with the word "map".  Select the "Keyword" option from the drop down box. Click on the "Search" button.
Examples:
-"Kirstein map" for maps that show the Kirstein Building (no need to enter the word Building).
-"Alphonse map"  for Alphonse Street maps.
-"Bausch and Lomb and map" will yield the most complete results when searching for map locations for the Bausch & Lomb Co. No need to enter Co., Company, Inc., or Incorporated into the search box.
Tip: Streets and avenues are usually entered with their abbreviations Ave. and St., while the words alley, road, etc. are entered spelled out.
Browse one plat book or atlas?
Find the book you want from the List of Directory and Plat Maps in Rochester Images page in this guide and click on the hyperlinked date.
Find an individual map?
Browse the Individual Maps in Rochester Images list in this guide and click on the hyperlinked title you want.
Find landowners on these historic maps?
Try typing the terms "landowners" and "maps" and your desired geographical area (e.g. "Penfield") into the Rochester Images database's keyword search box. Select the "Keywords" search option from the drop down box. Then click on the "Search" button. When you choose the map you want to search, use the zoom feature to help you read map details.
Tip:
Landowners' names are not indexed; you must search for names on the maps.
