Each year, empty boats were weighed on special scales at the
weigh locks. When they were loaded with cargo, they were weighed
again and the difference set the toll for that trip. The captain
showed the record of the paid toll and the total weight at each
of the seventeen toll offices along the Canal. |
If traffic was heavy and a boat could not pass, or needed to
turn, it would go to the wide waters. This one is now Lake Riley
in Cobbs Hill Park. |
