An advertisement for the Stein Manufacturing Company from the Union and Advertiser, March 23, 1888. |
The Stein Manufacturing Company was begun around 1872 by German immigrant Samuel Stein, who began selling his patented burial caskets. The company grew quickly in size and stature, establishing an elaborate cluster of buildings at Court and Exchange Streets. Besides the reputation of the elaborate and efficient manufacturing plant, it also achieved national reputation when the company designed the casket for General Ulysses Grant in 1885. In 1891 the company became part of the National Casket Company and eventually just one of the many branches of this organization. By the 1980s, all operations in Rochester had ceased.
