The Canal over the River


The Aqueduct carried the canal, and all the boats that used it, over the Genesee River. Flour from nearby mills was the largest early cargo, but items such as coal, paper, and clothing were also shipped from businesses near the aqueduct.
The aqueduct provided shipping access near the waterpower of the river. But it also created problems. See more information about this image

Spring thaws and heavy rains would swell the river, and the aqueduct’s arches would fill with water, making the aqueduct a dam that raised the river to flood level.
In 1865, the aqueduct was a factor in a flood that caused over $1 million in damage to downtown. See more information about this image
